The Armor of God is something we should be applying daily. If you are familiar with the Bible, then you know believers are in a constant spiritual battle.

Our enemy knows our weaknesses and attacks us when we are weak. This affects us both physically and emotionally. If we aren’t studying our Bible to recognize his attacks, we are subject to believing his lies.

The Bible tells us that our enemy prowls around searching for someone to devour. It’s no secret that Satan wants to stumble us and keep us as far away from God as possible. Thankfully, we have the Full Armor of God for protection.

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV

What is the Armor of God?

Paul teaches us in Ephesians 6:10-18 that we have protection from the spiritual battles we encounter. In these Bible verses, he tells us to put on the Full Armor of God as our spiritual armor. There are 6 pieces of God’s Armor and they each protect us differently.

The war we are fighting is not against flesh and blood. It’s against the powers of the dark world and the spiritual forces of evil. This is why he says to apply spiritual armor to prepare for these battles.

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, you will encounter spiritual battles. Do not fear these battles because God has equipped us with everything we need to fight them. We need to put on the Full Armor of God and trust the Lord to protect us.

Armor of God Scripture

It’s important to become familiar with Scripture about the Armor of God. For us to apply something to our lives, we need an understanding of what it is and how it works.

The Bible is the only Truth in this world. We should be using it to find answers to every situation we face.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.” Ephesians 6:10-18 NKJV

Armor of God List

Paul lists the full armor of God in Ephesians. Since we are going to focus on each piece of armor in this article, I thought it would be a good idea to list them here.

  • Belt of Truth
  • Breastplate of Righteousness
  • Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
  • Shield of Faith
  • Helmet of Salvation
  • Sword of the Spirit

The Full Armor of God Explained

Paul lists the different pieces of the Armor of God in the order they were put on by Roman soldiers.

Paul was in prison and was surrounded by guards all the time. He never wasted time serving the Lord. Even while he was in prison, he was teaching us how to use the tools God has given us to get through this life.

Life is a battleground and we need to be strong in our faith if we are going to stand against spiritual entities.

1. Belt of Truth

“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth” Eph. 6:14

The Belt of Truth covers all areas of a person’s life. We must be intentional about guarding our spiritual walk.

Falling into sin can happen to anyone. Once we back off the frontlines we are subject to making mistakes. When we aren’t on guard, we open a little crack for the enemy to work through.

Take David for example. He took off his Armor of God and took a break. During this time, He was tempted into things that weren’t pleasing to the Lord. In Psalm 32:1-5, we see that God restored His relationship with David after his sin with Bathsheba.

Praise the Lord that we serve a God who forgives. He is faithful to forgive us but we still suffer the consequences of our sins.

A dishonest Christian cannot withstand the enemy. He isn’t strong enough. Living a life of Truth is crucial. We need the belt of Truth to cover our entire life so we are prepared for the spiritual battle.

2. Breastplate of Righteousness

“Having put on the breastplate of righteousness” Eph. 6:14

The Roman soldiers wore a breastplate that went completely around their bodies so their front and back were protected during battle. We need to be wrapped in righteousness.

The word righteousness means doing what is right. Many people suffer from the consequences of their sins because they don’t use the Breastplate of Righteousness.

Feeling conviction from doing wrong is a normal process. If you have received Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit dwells within you.

He guides you into all Truth and convicts you when doing wrong. When we repent of our sin God forgives us.

The righteousness spoken of here is the righteousness of believers. Romans 4:5 states that our faith is credited as righteousness. Romans 8:1 says There is no condemnation for those in Christ.

As Christians, we need to be confident that we are righteous and not condemned. We need to wear the Breastplate of Righteousness so we are protected by the Full Armor of God.

3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

“And having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace” Eph. 6:15

Roman soldiers had solid sturdy shoes. These solid shoes represent a firm foundation. As Christians, we must have a solid understanding of the Gospel.

We need to study the Bible and pray so that we know how to live a life pleasing to the Lord. Multiple Bible study resources are available and they can help you learn more.

The Bible is the Living Word and it takes a lifetime of studying. The Lord will use people and experiences to grow you on your journey. We will never be perfect until we meet Him in heaven.

This piece of the Armor of God is for sharing the Gospel and representing it. We should always be doing these two things in love. The Holy Spirit brings people to know the Lord. People do not. We are just a witness to His goodness.

God does not call us to walk on people or become prideful in our understanding. We are blessed to have the Bible and the “Good News” is a message for all to receive.

4. Shield of Faith

“Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one” Eph. 6:16

With this piece of spiritual armor, we see the words “Above All”. This means we are to use the Shield of Faith against everything. It’s a shield over all the Armor of God.

Spiritual attacks come in many different forms. For me personally, my faith is being attacked often. We need to protect ourselves from lies that are in our thoughts.

We all experience thoughts that aren’t what we want to think. We need to take these thoughts captive and line them up with the Word of God. Knowing our Bible will help us to distinguish the difference between the Truth and the lie.

I’ve struggled with anxiety. The problem is, that anxiety causes fear and fear is the opposite of faith. Taking the time to memorize Bible verses in that area has helped me tremendously.

I have a list of Scriptures about anxiety and I’ve even created printable Bible verses and Scripture coloring pages so I can keep them on hand.

Our faith is the foundation of our walk with Jesus. We need to be strong in our faith to wear this piece of Armor.

5. Helmet of Salvation

“And take the helmet of salvation” Eph. 6:17

We need to believe in our Salvation. Salvation can only be obtained from having faith in Jesus Christ. Once we are saved, we start to see things differently. Connecting with other believers is so important here.

I highly recommend believers get involved in a Bible study group. I’ve been a part of the same woman’s Bible study group ever since I became a believer. It has helped me grow tremendously.

If groups aren’t available, you should consider committing yourself to a study with friends or family members. We have completed several Bible studies over the years.

If you want Bible study recommendations, check out the following articles: Bible Studies for Men, Women Bible Studies, and Bible Studies for Kids. They are all studies we have completed.

Don’t be discouraged by what is going on in the world. The Bible tells us how it will all end. We need to stand tall and wear our Helmet of Salvation. Keep looking for the return of Jesus Christ. Don’t lose hope.

6. Sword of the Spirit

“And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” Eph. 6:17

The sword is referred to as the Word of God. It’s speaking of specific words from the Bible that can be used in specific situations. All the other pieces of the Armor of God are defensive. This piece is offensive.

To use this piece of Spiritual Armor properly, we need to know the Bible. We need God to give us the wisdom of what situations we can speak about.

The Bible is full of information but we need to have knowledge and understanding of how to apply it. The only way to obtain this is through praying and asking the Lord to open your mind so you can gain this wisdom and understanding.

We are so blessed to have the freedom to study God’s Word. He makes it freely available to us. There are tons of free resources to learn God’s Word like free Bible study apps and free daily devotional apps.

God’s Word feeds us daily. We need this food to use the Sword of Spirit properly.

Armor of God Prayer

With everything, we need to pray. The Armor of God is big armor to carry and we can’t do it without God’s help. Here’s an Armor of God prayer that you can pray to give you the strength to put on the Full Armor of God.

Father, I know you are with me all the time and I thank you so much. I want to continue growing in my walk with you and I know I can’t do it alone. I’m asking for you to give me the wisdom and strength to use your armor. Help me to put on the Belt of Truth and be honest, help me to wear the Breastplate of Righteousness and believe I am forgiven, help me to wear the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace and share who you are with the world in a loving way, help me hold up the Shield of Faith and not question your faithfulness, help me to put on the Helmet of Salvation and remember that you died to save me, and help me to use the Sword of the Spirit to speak into situations about your Truth. I thank you so much for always being available and I have faith that you will help me wear your armor as intended. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Do You Put on Your Full Armor of God Daily?

Our goal should be to have the Full Armor of God at every conscious moment. This is something we can’t do in our strength so we need to pray about it.

I say every conscious moment because it’s hard to be aware of it when you are asleep. Sometimes before bed, I feel like I’m in a spiritual attack. I say a prayer asking the Lord to protect my mind while I’m sleeping and it has helped so much.

I’m praying that this article gives you an understanding of the Armor of God. It’s so important to wear it daily so we can get through every day.
