The Bible tells us that patience is a virtue, it’s a fruit of the spirit. This means as believers, we should be working to be patient in all areas of our lives.

This is much easier said than done. According to Dictionary.com, patience means:

The ability to wait, or to continue doing something despite difficulties, or to suffer without complaining or becoming annoyed.

This definition shows us that patience is a virtue especially if we are called to love one another. As Christians, how can we tolerate and love others if we aren’t patient?

Thankfully we can stand on God’s Truth to help us be patient.

What is Patience in the Bible?

In the Bible, Ecclesiastes says being patient in the spirit is better than being proud. There’s no question, that we need the Holy Spirit to help us be patient.

As I mentioned above, patience is a fruit of the spirit and is essential to pleasing the Lord.

“Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.” Ecclesiastes 7:8

How Can I Be Patient?

Learning to be patient is one of life’s hardest struggles. Regardless of where you are in your Christian walk, it can be a daily struggle.

Whether you are dealing with financial issues, or health issues that are affecting yourself or your family members, being patient isn’t always an easy task.

However, as Christians, patience is a virtue so it’s something that we must develop. We must learn to be calm and reserved in the face of hardship. We have to learn to draw our strength from the Lord.

“Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10

In life, there have been times I have been tested to where I didn’t have my own strength to go on. I struggled with my faith and really questioned God’s reasoning and God’s timing.

I didn’t understand why I was dealing with certain situations or why I had to go through them. In my mind, I knew I was doing my best to live according to God’s teachings.

I had to learn to let go and give it to God because He has a plan. Instead of losing patience, we need to surrender our situations to God.

Being Patient

What I didn’t realize was that God was preparing me for a journey where I needed a lot of patience and I needed to lean on him to get me through it.

What he was teaching me during a pretty dark time was that he was with me. He never left me. He wanted me to understand that all things happen in his time and not mine. And that the reward will be so worth the wait and the pain.

“The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.” Lamentations 3:25.

Think about how long our Father waited for us to take the step to become a Christian. He patiently waits for us to receive salvation. He doesn’t send us signs.

I mean, can you imagine if he did? “Hello? Can you hurry up please and accept eternal life”?

Throughout the Bible, he has shown us different stories of those who struggled with patience. I’m often reminded of Sarah and her faithfulness.

Abraham was supposed to be the Father of all generations and unfortunately, Sarah couldn’t conceive. She couldn’t understand why Abraham was chosen to be such a person when she couldn’t have a baby.

She even laughed at God when he told Abraham he would have a son. Then, it happened. Sarah became pregnant when she was already way past the age of childbearing.

God heard her prayers and knew the journey he had planned out for them, however, as with all things, God had his own time as to when they would conceive. As a matter of fact, it’s believed she was 90 years old when she did. It was in no one’s time but his own.

As Christians, we need to practice being patient daily. It’s not always easy but with God’s Word, we can learn how to be patient.
